Name: Lauren Shaw
What I do: I am a structural engineer at Symmetrys.
Why I decided to apply for MIPIM Challengers: I heard about MIPIM through my associates and directors. The event seemed like an incredible way to network with like-minded people and to learn more about the property industry. So, when I was told about the opportunity to get involved, I jumped at the chance.
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: In 2020, I was fortunate enough to be part of a volunteer team working on a project for EFOD (Engineers for Overseas Development) which involved designing a neonatal unit in Mbale, Uganda. My role was to aid in the design of the earthworks, landscaping and retaining walls. It was one of my first experiences in collaborative design after transitioning from a contractor to a consultancy role, and I really enjoyed working with people in different sectors.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: When people hear ‘property industry’, they think of real estate agents and buying houses, but in fact the property industry is massive and there is a broad range of jobs that feed into it, e.g., engineering, architecture, planning, surveying, financial services, etc.
Why I got into the property industry: I initially started on site as an engineer in the infrastructure industry (highways and bridges). Wanting a change of pace, I took on a new role in structural design which exposed me to property development and refurbishment. I found building construction both challenging and interesting, which is the perfect combination for me.
What I do in my downtime: I love to read, write, dance and socialise! I also love taking the occasional day or evening to do absolutely nothing at all and just relax.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: I love my job, I think if I were to do something that wasn’t engineering it would have to be something completely different but still allows for creativity. Maybe I’d be an artist, a writer, or an actress – maybe all three!
My advice for someone just starting out: You are doing fine. Everyone takes things at their own pace and prioritises differently. If you’re not at the same level as the person next to you – don’t worry, as long as you are working towards your goals and enjoying yourself, everything else will fall into place. Don’t forget that the most important person in your life is yourself, so make sure to take care of your physical and mental health.
My motto/mantra: If it’s not something you can address right now, let it go and revisit it later.
My inspiration: The biggest inspiration for me are my friends. Whether in their careers or personal lives, they continue to inspire and encourage me to reach out and grab a little bit more for myself.
Why I’m passionate about ESG: I love everything about nature, which also brings me a sense of guilt, both for myself and on behalf of the past generations. While I would like to think that we didn’t know the repercussions of our actions at the time, we have damaged the world that we live in, and I want to help make some meaningful steps to rectify our impact.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: I would like to be a chartered engineer and be leading my own team.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: Catherine Howard and Taylor Swift. I feel like we would have a really fun time.
Lauren Shaw is part of the first cohort of MIPIM Challengers – a new initiative that will see 16 young built environment professionals from around the world invited to MIPIM 2024 to challenge the real estate industry.
