Job title: Carpentry and joinery apprentice at Barratt David Wilson Kent
What I do: I’m training in all aspects of carpentry on a building site, and I hope to qualify as a Level 2 carpenter this spring. I do all things associated with first and second fixing, so I’ve been helping to put up roofing, building stairs, and even learning more highly-skilled carpentry tasks, like cutting skirting and architraves and fitting doors.
Why I got into the property industry: I enjoy working on practical projects and my love for woodwork grew throughout my teenage years. After I left school with an A* in A-level product design under my belt, the path to a career in construction seemed like the logical next step.
How I did it: I looked on the GOV apprenticeship web site for apprenticeships in carpentry and made an application to Barratt Homes. I was successful in the interview and got a job at The Woodlands, which had just launched in Canterbury, Kent.
My first proper job: Art and product design technician (grammar school)
My first big break: Being chosen as the art and product design top performer after my sixth form gave me the opportunity to take on a position at an architect firm. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pursue an apprenticeship due to Covid and I secured a new opportunity working onsite with Barratt Homes.
My inspiration(s): My family – they are my biggest supporters.
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: Definitely the physical aspect of working within the building environment. Having the mental resilience to continue in the job when it does not go well… or getting out in all weathers, even when it rains and is very cold!
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Telling mum and dad that I was starting my apprenticeship.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: The biggest misconception is that property is a male-dominated industry and only men can do it.
My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: I would love to only work in the summer when it’s warm!
Why I’m so passionate about DE&I: Coming into my apprenticeship, I held some misconceptions about how I would be perceived as a woman working on a building site, and was concerned how I would fit in. However, I have been treated with respect and made to feel part of the team, regardless of gender.
Why I’m so passionate about ESG: We have to build houses for the future. Working for a company like Barratt Kent, I feel a part of the mission to create new homes in an ethical and sustainable way.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: I’d love to have passed my Level 3 qualification and used my skills to move into site management or self-employment.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: Melissa McCarthy. Her films always make me laugh.
What I do in my downtime: I go to the gym after work and horse riding each weekend. I also enjoy taking out my two cockapoos Nelly and Nancy for long walks.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: Something creative – I couldn’t say for certain what that might be. I can paint and now I and build things!
My advice for someone just starting out: Persevere. Don’t be afraid to give anything a go.
My motto/mantra: Keep showing up. You don’t know who you are inspiring.
