Name: Zoe Ramsay
Job title: Surveyor, Hanover Green
What I do: I work for Hanover Green who are a commercial property consultancy in Central London. I have two years’ experience, specialising in Central London and Greater London lease advisory, agency and investment.
Why I got into the property industry: I got into the property industry because it offered the perfect blend of my interests in economics, architecture, and real estate. I love how interactive and dynamic the profession is. It goes far beyond the confines of an office and each week it’s markedly different. My role demands an active presence in the field which has helped me to quickly cultivate a network of contacts and stay attuned to the ever-changing market trends.
How I did it: I undertook an internship year with Hanover Green in 2020/21 and graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a first class degree with honours in property finance and investment in 2022 before rejoining the company as a graduate surveyor in January 2023 and qualifying as a chartered surveyor in April 2024.
My first proper job: A tennis coach, following in my mother’s footsteps.
My first big break: Undertaking a work placement year at Hanover Green and getting offered a job post-graduation.
My inspiration(s): My parents as they’ve taught me the importance of hard work and dedication to overcoming challenges. Through their actions and guidance, they have motivated me to pursue my passions and strive for excellence.
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: The Covid-19 pandemic was, like for many, a very difficult period to navigate particularly after having just begun my placement year at Hanover Green. It presented significant obstacles such as disruptions to work, social isolation, health concerns and mental health strains. The real estate industry, in particular, faced shifts in market demand, a shift towards remote work, and the need for safer, healthier buildings.
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: To date, passing my APC has been my proudest achievement. It has taught me the importance of discipline and time management, requiring consistent preparation and prioritisation.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: One of the biggest misconceptions people have about the property industry is that it’s all about selling houses or properties. While residential property sales play a visible part of the industry, it’s actually much broader and more complex. People often overlook the technical side of the job, like understanding legal frameworks, building regulations and sustainability issues. The role also requires strong analytical skills to assess market trends, manage risk, and ensure the best outcome for clients.
My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: As we all know, the property industry has historically been male dominated and there is still a long way to go in achieving true gender balance and representation. Women often bring a different set of experiences, problem-solving approaches and communication styles to the table which help contribute towards a more well-rounded decision-making process. Therefore, I would encourage the education, awareness and promotion of more woman to leadership positions.
Why I’m so passionate about DE&I: I recognise the importance of promoting a diverse working environment as everyone deserves equal access to opportunities, regardless of their background. The property sector plays a crucial role in shaping communities and it’s essential that it reflects the diversity of those it serves.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: I’d like to see myself progressing through the company to a more senior role and working on innovative projects that merge sustainability, technology and inclusivity, ensuring that the property landscape reflects the diverse needs of the communities it serves.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: Serena Williams as she’s a powerful figure in sports who also advocates for equality and breaking barriers.
What I do in my downtime: I enjoy playing hockey and going to the gym in my free time as it offers a perfect balance of physical challenge and mental relaxation. Hockey allows me to be competitive while being part of a team and it’s a great way to stay active and focused. Exercising pushes me to improve myself while offering a fun and rewarding break from daily routines, keeping my body and mind in sync.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: I could also see myself in a role within the fitness and health industry or maybe even the fashion world.
My advice for someone just starting out: Build a strong network and surround yourself with experienced professionals who can offer guidance, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
My motto/mantra: I resonate well with the motto “work hard, play hard” because it promotes a balanced life, encouraging dedication to achieving goals while also emphasising the importance of relaxation and enjoyment. By working hard, individuals can be productive and successful, but the “play hard” aspect reminds them to take time for themselves, reducing burnout and enhancing mental well-being.
