Job title: Construction manager at BW: Workplace Experts
What I do: I started with BW: Workplace Experts as an apprentice a few years ago and have grown my career with the company. I now lead on construction projects from start to finish, ensuring they are delivered safely, on time and to the highest standards. I work closely on site to coordinate the works with subcontractors and collaborate with the clients and stakeholders to bring plans to life.
Why I got into the property industry: A life goal of mine has always been to refurbish houses. When I researched how to get into this field, I came across the world of fit-out and it sounded really exciting. The idea of being part of creating something physical and lasting really appealed to me.
How I did it: I took the opportunity to do some work experience with BW to get a feel for the day-to-day and to gain a better understanding of the industry. Although it was only a short placement, I instantly loved the fast-paced environment and the variety of people I met. Everyone was so willing to show me the ropes.
My first proper job: During my GCSEs and A-Levels, I worked part-time as a waitress at my grandparents shop.
My first big break: When I was assigned to work on one of BW’s biggest flagship projects at the time. At that point, I had just been promoted to assistant and was given my own floors to manage. This personally felt like my first big breakthrough and had a lasting impact on my career. Through the project I developed fantastic relationships with BW colleagues and subcontractors, in fact many of these relationships still play a role in my projects today. Another big break for me was when I was given the opportunity to take part in the BW Global Alliance Exchange Programme with HITT in Washington for three months, which was a pretty big deal.
My inspiration(s): My nan is one of my biggest inspirations. She has experienced a lot of loss throughout her life and still continues to get up and march on! Her resilience is remarkable and she has the biggest heart. I also admire how she still continues to travel the world in her 80s.
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: My biggest challenge was probably completing my three-month exchange at HITT in the US. Although it was my greatest and proudest achievement, it was hard on a personal level. I had never been away from home for so long without my parents and brothers before, let alone doing it half way across the world! I gained so much from this experience though, and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Completing the exchange at HITT was my greatest/proudest achievement. When I returned, I was asked by BW to do a presentation about it at our company conference. I was petrified but I got up and did it, I was really proud of myself!
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: I would say the biggest misconception, and one I certainly had before joining the construction industry, is that it’s full of “old dinosaurs.” This really isn’t the case. The industry is full of people from all walks of life. It’s a great mix of young and old, modern thinkers and those who prefer traditional ways, but that is what makes it work so well. It’s so much fun meeting different personalities and backgrounds. Everyone shares the same goal at BW to achieve the highest defect-free standards and quality, and we adapt and work to each other’s strengths.
My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: I love the sector and the career I am building, but I’m very aware that there is still a lot to be done to get this message to the next generation. In my experience, it was never really spoken about as a career yet there are so many different career paths within the industry. We all need to do our part to encourage others in and promote what we do more, because our industry can offer so many incredible job opportunities.
Why I’m so passionate about ESG: We all have a responsibility because construction has such a huge impact on our environment and society. We aren’t just building and constructing for the now – our work is shaping the future and I want to leave a positive legacy for generations to come.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: I would like to be project manager leading my own projects to success.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: 100% Harry Styles!
What I do in my downtime: I enjoy spending time with my friends, going on walks, shopping and reading.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: I would probably be a primary school teacher. I was accepted to start a course at university to study for this, but turned it down as it didn’t feel like the right move at the time. I am glad I made that decision now! I also had a phase where I wanted to work in sports media.
My advice for someone just starting out: I joined BW when I was 18, fresh out of sixth form and lockdown had just ended. Put simply, I was terrified! I want others to know that it’s also okay to feel this way. What matters most is taking a chance and showing effort and enthusiasm to learn. Do the small things you can to help the team and build on that each day. One thing I’ve realised is that even people who have been in the industry for years don’t know everything and that they’re learning every day too! So, stay curious, be proactive, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
My motto/mantra: Great projects start with great partnerships.
