Name: Adam Ghadiali

Job title: Director, head of growth UK, Bright Spaces

What I do: As head of growth UK, spearheading Bright Spaces’ expansion into the UK market, my role involves crafting and executing growth strategies, originating and closing business development initiatives, and collaborating on impactful marketing and PR campaigns. I’m dedicated to ensuring a seamless yet impactful transition for Bright Spaces within the UK’s dynamic real estate landscape.

Why I got into the property industry: My start in the property industry was a slightly serendipitous beginning at the age of 18 when I worked as a ‘Saturday boy’ for a boutique residential estate agency in Kensington, London. A fortuitous opportunity led me to conduct my first successful rental property viewing, igniting some passion for the industry during the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis. The resilience of the rental market during those tough economic times solidified my commitment to a career in real estate.

How I did it: A bit of luck and adaptability! Not really knowing what I wanted to do at that age, I immersed myself in the world of estate agency, leveraging my soft skills in entrepreneurial environments. This early exposure cultivated a swift adaptation to the demands of the industry, but also I was very lucky to have the support of the owner, who ended up becoming a lifetime mentor to me.

My first proper job: Transitioning from estate agency, I had a brief hiatus from the property industry, taking on the role of a business development manager at the British Chamber of Commerce. This marked a pivotal leap into the commercial world, where I learnt the importance of invaluable networks and insights, which was pivotal to my professional growth.

My first big break: I’d have to say my time with YOO – the largest residential brand globally, and essentially the early innovators in branded residences. The environment was fast-paced and had an entrepreneurial ethos. It was here I rekindled my passion for real estate and design, under the mentorship of industry luminaries. Extensive travel in emerging markets exposed me to globally awarded developments, enriching my understanding and catalysing my growth within the intersection of design, property, and entrepreneurship.

My inspiration(s): I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with industry leaders such as Bernhard Bohnenberger, Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox, whose visionary leadership and boundless creativity have profoundly influenced my professional trajectory.

The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: Navigating the complexities of managing a large FM team during the early days of Covid-19 in Dubai presented incredible challenges. Balancing logistical hurdles, employee welfare, and evolving regulatory landscapes underscored the resilience and adaptability demanded in crisis management.

My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Originating the La Peregrina, Panama project (currently under development). This is a remote island hospitality and marina project in the Pacific Ocean that stands as a testament to my passion for transformative and disruptive real estate ventures with a global impact.

The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: A consistent misconception is the ability to make quick gains. Contrary to popular belief, success in real estate demands a lot of patience, perseverance, an understanding of market dynamics, and having a backup plan if all fails.

My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: Navigating through complex planning regulations remains a persistent challenge within the industry. Streamlining regulatory frameworks to foster greater efficiency and transparency is imperative for sustainable growth.

Why I’m so passionate about DE&I and ESG: My advocacy for DE&I and ESG initiatives started with my experiences in proptech solutions, aimed at decarbonising the built environment. These experiences underscore the urgency and collective responsibility required to address pressing global challenges.

Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: Leveraging my experience, client network of investors, developers and disruptive technologies within the real estate sector. Positioned at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, I want to champion these initiatives driving tangible societal and environmental impact.

Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: Richard Branson, Anthony Bourdain, Jeremy Clarkson and for a bit of fun, Sean Lock!

What do you do in your downtime: I’ve recently taken up painting again, which I’m really happy about and I hope it continues. I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new flavours. I also love my bike and anything that gets me out in nature.

The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: Real estate and proptech are most definitely my professional calling, underscoring an enduring passion for industry innovation and community engagement.

My advice for someone just starting out: Stay grounded, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and continuously push the boundaries of your comfort zone. Each obstacle encountered is a stepping stone towards professional excellence. It’s also important to find mentors in life, particularly with those who have taken similar paths to yourselves, and to always give feedback with humble grace.

My motto/mantra: “Embrace adversity as a catalyst for growth, and let passion illuminate the path to purposeful endeavours.”
