Job title: Bricklaying apprentice at Keepmoat
What I do: I’m a bricklayer – and proud of it! My days are spent turning designs into reality, one brick at a time. I’m currently undertaking my Level 2 Bricklaying apprenticeship at the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) Training Hub in Scotswood. This apprenticeship not only equips me with a nationally recognised qualification, but is also unlocking my dream future.
Why I got into the property industry: I’ve always been drawn to creative, hands-on work that lets me see achievement in real-time. There are so many opportunities for growth and progression within the construction industry, which makes it even more exciting.
How I did it: I started with a short course called Women into Construction with Keepmoat. This helped me secure an apprenticeship course that opened the door to a career I love. An apprenticeship also means I can earn while I learn – a perfect combination!
My first big break: Winning the Rising Star of the North 2023 Award at the North East Business Awards was a huge moment for me. It was great to receive recognition of all my hard work.
My inspiration(s): My biggest inspiration is myself! Every day I work hard to build a career and a bright future, proving people wrong and pushing myself forward. I didn’t feel supported by my peers when I first explained I wanted to go into construction, so I’m proud that I persevered and stuck with the career I love.
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: Braving the elements has been one of the toughest challenges so far. It makes being precise and accurate whilst laying bricks difficult, but it’s all part of the environment when working outside.
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Honestly, it’s building my confidence. That’s something no one can see but me – being part of this apprenticeship has been life-changing and I feel like a completely different person. I’m so glad I managed to find this opportunity.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: People think construction is a “man’s job.” That couldn’t be further from the truth – women absolutely belong here, and we’re thriving! I love working outside and getting stuck into the nitty gritty elements of being a brickie, particularly reading and understanding technical drawings.
My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: It can be really stressful and overwhelming at times, it’s so important to stay organised and on track when delivering tasks to a timeline.
Why I’m so passionate about DE&I: Everyone deserves a fair shot to do what they love, no matter who they are. Diversity, equity and inclusion ensure that doors are open for everyone.
Why I’m so passionate about ESG: The future matters. Our work needs to reflect our commitment to protecting the environment and building sustainable communities.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time career-wise: I hope to be comfortable in life and steadily growing in my career – still doing what I love, but with even more expertise.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: My uncle Michael Bell. He passed away but spent his life helping young people in Newcastle through the Patchwork Project. His stories and wisdom would be invaluable.
What I do in my downtime: I enjoy cooking – it’s creative and a great way to relax after a long day.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: I’d either work in childcare or working abroad somewhere warm – maybe in Tenerife!
My advice for someone just starting out: Keep your head down and get on with it. The rewards come to those who stick with it and work hard.
My motto/mantra: Hard work always pays off.
