Capital&Centric has entered into a pre-construction services agreement with Clegg Construction to convert a 1960s car park in Newcastle-under-Lyme into 111 homes.
Work on the Karparc scheme, which Capital&Centric said would be the first UK multi-storey car park to be repurposed as homes, is due to commence this autumn.
The conversion will see the brutalist frame of the car park reimagined as a new community of one- and two-bedroom apartments featuring a three-storey atrium, lush greenery and social spaces including a gym, lounge and social hub.
John Moffat, joint managing director of Capital&Centric, said: “This isn’t your average regeneration. We’re flipping expectations of what’s possible in our towns. Signing with Clegg Construction means Karparc is one big step closer, bringing new homes, green spaces and energy to a spot that’s long been overlooked. We can’t wait to get going this autumn.”
Simon Tagg, council leader at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, added: “It’s great news that this pioneering scheme, one of three being delivered for the council by Capital & Centric to reimagine Newcastle town centre, has reached an exciting new phase. We’re really looking forward to seeing this visionary project – the first of its type in the country – come to life which will attract new people into the area who will in turn support our local businesses.”
