Building control firm Assent Building Compliance has ceased trading and is set to enter insolvency.

The collapse of the firm, which operates two registered building control approvers – Oculus Building Consultancy and LB Building Control – could have a significant impact on a number of development projects going through the approval process at the moment, according to Neil Boothroyd, a construction dispute resolution specialist at Gateley Vinden.

Boothroyd said: “News that Assent Building Compliance and its operations, including the two registered building control approvers under its banner (Oculus Building Consultancy and LB Building Control), is entering insolvency will have a very significant ripple effect on the progress of a number of ongoing developments.

“There will be several Higher-Risk Building projects that will have to stop works and will likely suffer considerable delays while alternative inspection arrangements can be put in place to process the relevant building control approvals in line with the Building Safety Act 2022.

“As a result, many projects may need to go through an extended approval process which will have a detrimental impact and place increased strain on the Building Safety Regulator system which is already under intense scrutiny for the severe backlog and delays to project approvals.”

A spokesperson for The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) added: “We are working to confirm the exact number, but we are currently aware of 10 HRB projects still held by LB or Oculus under the pre-HRB transition model. We have asked the RBIs involved in these projects to get in touch with us directly.
“We appreciate the importance of continuity and intend to secure resources to limit any delays. We have also asked Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs) who were working with us on the framework to contact us directly. While the cases they were working on will need to be reallocated, we do not envisage a knock-on impact on our overall Gateway 2 work.”
