Question: I am an A-Level student studying Mathematics, Art and Media Studies, hoping to study architecture at university. I am currently looking at university options and can’t decide on the right university for me. Should I focus more on the league table rankings or student experience? Is there anything else I should take into consideration when applying for certain courses, perhaps even part-time studies?

Answer: Great question. Choosing the right Architecture school for University has many facets to it. Personally, I’d consider the league tables but let this inform your choice, along with other factors; it isn’t the biggest priority. Student experience is important, but that can be very personal/subjective. Do your research, make a short list and go and visit the Uni’s. Seeing the City and Campus environment, and talking to staff and students, should help you determine what is right for you.
We all know that Architecture can be a long academic road which is very expensive these days. Consider all options carefully, such as apprenticeship or sponsorship routes, working with a practice. I’d wholly endorse getting as much work experience as possible, alongside an enjoyable and fulfilling academic and student experience.
An enriching and immersive student experience of design/Architecture is hugely important. But so too is real world perspective of the industry. I feel there can often be a disconnect here. Ultimately you want and need a range of skills, knowledge and experience to be employable and therefore to reach your full potential.
