Wandsworth Council has approved plans for the first phase of the renewal of the Alton Estate in Roehampton.
The Block A phase, which is located on Danebury Avenue and Holybourne Avenue, will deliver a purpose-built community complex and new council homes in an adjacent building.
Designed by HTA Design, the community will feature 55 family-sized council homes, each with spacious private balconies and access to a shared garden.
Neighbouring these will be a four-storey building with adaptable floor layouts for a range of uses including a GP surgery, library, council offices, a youth space and a community hall.
Simon Bayliss, managing partner at HTA Design said: “This approval is a significant step forward for the Alton community. From the outset, we worked closely with residents and Wandsworth Council to deliver a place that reflects the priorities of local people and supports the future of the Alton Estate. Our design takes inspiration from the estate’s architectural heritage while raising ambitions for sustainability, wellbeing and long‑term resilience.”
Aydin Dikerdem, cabinet member for housing at Wandsworth Council, added: “I know this is a big moment for the people who live and work here as this block has been an empty eyesore for too long. Now we can get on with transforming this part of the estate by providing the whole Alton community with a fantastic new library, youth facilities and GP practice, alongside affordable council homes and green spaces.”
