Tower Hamlets Council has approved plans for a new £1bn residential scheme to be built on the site of the former Westferry Printworks on the Isle of Dogs in East London.
The plans, which were designed by PLP Architecture and put forward by Westferry Development – a company wholly-owned by Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell – will see 1,358 new homes built in addition to a new school and retail space.
The homes will be delivered across several blocks ranging from four to 31 storeys and 379 of the homes have been designated affordable.
Northern & Shall previously submitted two planning applications to develop the 15-acre site, which were turned down by the local council.
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council said: “We have approved the application to redevelop the Westferry Printworks site. This will provide 1,358 new homes, of which 35% will be affordable, a new secondary school and plenty of space for new shops and businesses. This is a major regeneration scheme on a currently disused site, which will help breathe new life into this historic area of London Docklands. Construction is expected to start later this year and will be completed in four phases over six to eight years.”
