Dominus has secured planning consent for the conversion of a former office building at 5-10 Great Tower Street in London into a new 237-room hotel.
The company has worked with Studio Moren to shape a new scheme that will retain 100% of the existing building’s substructure and 70% of its superstructure and facade.
Through upgrades to the building’s envelope, plant systems and the introduction of on-site renewable energy generation in the form of PV panels, Dominus is seeking to obtain a BREEAM Excellent rating for the scheme.
Anupriya Rajpal, development director at Dominus, said: “Securing a planning approval from the City of London is a major moment in terms of progressing plans for Great Tower Street and construction completion in 2025. Dominus operates three hotels in central London and this project will be of a similarly high standard.
“Having identified the opportunity to repurpose and retrofit this building, the Dominus team are working hard to give this largely vacant building a new lease of life. Our collaboration with the City of London planning team to bring these proposals forward will create a new attraction within the city, boosting activity in the immediate surroundings.
“Our focus on the ESG credentials of our developments means we will create a high-quality place to stay within the city that is also sustainable. Former office buildings that are now redundant have huge potential for new uses, especially in prime locations. This strategy that we have refined over the past few years also works well with the City’s developing leisure infrastructure.”
Shravan Joshi, chairman of the City of London Corporation planning and transportation committee, added: “The City is an iconic location and attracts visitors and tourists from all around the world. We are therefore keen to support developments that will provide high-quality hotel accommodation, especially when those schemes reuse existing buildings, such as the proposals for Great Tower Street.
“We will continue to invest in measures to boost the Square Mile’s leisure offer and create a place that stands out nationally and internationally.”
