Name: Alex Neil
Job title: Partner, Allsop
Why I got into the property industry: My dad worked as a project manager in the property sector and was involved in some interesting projects, both in the UK and overseas. So naturally, I was always interested about the industry growing up, and by the time I was about 15, I knew it was something I could see myself going into.
How I did it: My first full-time role after university was a three-month summer contract surveying for the DofD, where I used a Psion device to log the condition of individual homes and assess maintenance requirements across the wider housing portfolio. This role gave me valuable early exposure to the built environment. During this time, Matthews & Goodman opened applications for its graduate programme. I applied, and secured a two-year graduate placement, which ultimately kick-started my career in the industry.
My first proper job: My first proper role in the industry was a two-year graduate scheme at Matthews & Goodman, where I gained experience across both City agency leasing and valuations. This provided a strong foundation in the fundamentals of the sector. The valuation work developed the technical expertise that underpins my work today, while the agency side helped me hone essential communication and relationship management skills.
My first big break: My first big break came in May 2002, when I secured a role in the commercial auction team at Allsop after passing my APC at Matthews & Goodman. I’ve never looked back, and 25 years on, I’m still part of the same team. I joined Allsop as a surveyor with one year’s post-qualification experience, and over time progressed through the business to my current role as an equity partner, specialising in the commercial auction market. Over the course of my career at Allsop, I have sold in excess of £1.5bn of stock and offered more than 2,500 lots at auction.
My inspiration(s): My father. He’s a devoted family man, hugely determined, and as hard-working today as he’s always been!
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: The financial crisis was a particularly challenging and uncertain time for the industry, with the market correction moving quickly, especially in London and the South East. More recently, the past couple of years in the commercial real estate sector have presented their own challenges, with ongoing political and economic uncertainty creating a more complex environment to navigate. It’s reinforced the importance of staying adaptable, making informed decisions and maintaining confidence through changing market conditions.
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Nine years ago, I was invited into the Allsop partnership – a milestone that marked a significant moment in my career. It represented not only recognition of my contribution to the business but also trust in my ability to help shape its future.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: That values only ever move in one direction. While property has historically been a strong long-term investment, like any asset class it is subject to market cycles and external factors, which can influence performance over time.
My biggest bugbear about the industry/the one thing I would change about the industry: The planning process. There’s a clear opportunity for it to be streamlined and refined, as current timelines can be lengthy and complex. Greater efficiency here would unlock significant potential across the sector.
Why I’m so passionate about DE&I: For me it comes down to one simple principle, and that is that everyone should have an equal opportunity to thrive, feel heard and be recognised for their contribution. Creating that kind of environment is essential to both individual and collective success.
Why I’m so passionate about ESG: Because it’s about protecting the future and creating a more sustainable legacy for the next generation.
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: My wife and family – it’s all about being surrounded by the people who matter most.
What I do in my downtime: Staying active, whether that’s skiing, playing golf or tennis, as well as enjoying good food, spending quality time with family, and making the most of time away on holiday.
The job I’d be doing if I was not doing this: Something outdoors – working by the sea with boats or spending my time skiing in the Alps would be my top choices!
My advice for someone just starting out: Gain as much hands-on experience as you can early on, and don’t be afraid to ask questions along the way. Focus on learning as much as you can, while maintaining a professional approach at all times – the rest will come with time and experience. As you progress, look to specialise in a particular sector so you can build expertise and become truly best-in-class in your field.
My motto/mantra: Be honest. Strong, lasting relationships are built on trust and transparency.
