What I do: I provide strategic advice on the acquisition and disposal of student accommodation across the UK, advising on both purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and HMO portfolios. My role involves delivering an end-to-end service, from initial appraisals and pitching for instructions through to running targeted marketing campaigns and working closely with solicitors to ensure successful completion. Relationship-building and client networking sit at the heart of what I do and are fundamental to driving repeat business and long-term partnerships.
Why I got into the property industry: My interest in property began early. When I was 12, my parents moved house and I became fascinated by the housing market, and particularly the role of the estate agent – I wouldn’t let my parents attend viewings without me and spent a lot of time searching for houses for us to view! My personality is also well suited to the industry; I’m naturally sociable, enjoy meeting new people and thrive on building strong relationships. I also take pleasure from a successful transaction whilst providing a high level of service throughout.
How I did it: Although I was drawn to property, I chose to study human geography at the University of Leeds, which gave me a strong foundation in analytical thinking, presentation skills and communication. During my final-year exams, Allsop contacted the department seeking maternity cover within their residential valuation team. I applied and was successful. That opportunity proved pivotal – Allsop went on to sponsor me through a master’s in surveying with the College of Estate Management, and in 2017 I completed my APC and qualified as a chartered surveyor. During this period, I transitioned from valuation into agency. The valuation experience gave me a robust technical grounding, but agency is where I truly feel at home.
My first proper job: I joined Allsop straight from university. Although my part-time work in cafes and pubs during my youth helped my social skills and confidence!
My first big break: What began as a temporary role evolved into a long-term career when Allsop offered to sponsor my master’s degree and support me through my MRICS qualification. The level of support I received from the firm was exceptional and passing first time remains a moment I’m incredibly proud of.
My inspiration(s): I was raised by hardworking parents who instilled a strong work ethic in me from an early age. Professionally, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside intelligent, supportive colleagues at Allsop who have helped me progress over the last 13 years. It’s incredibly motivating to work with people who are genuinely passionate about what they do. More broadly, the agency sector remains largely male-dominated and for this reason I’m particularly inspired by senior women in agency roles, regardless of what firm they work for. In particularly Lizzie Beagley, director and head of PBSA at Savills, stands out as someone I greatly admire and is widely respected within the sector.
The biggest challenge I’ve encountered to date: Learning to accept that I can’t control everything – and understanding when to influence, adapt, or simply let go.
My greatest achievement/proudest moment to date: Qualifying as a chartered surveyor was a huge personal achievement after several years of hard work and commitment. I also remember the completion of my first property transaction and the buzz it gave me. Many years on, that feeling hasn’t faded – I still get the same excitement with every successful deal.
The biggest misconception people have about the property industry: There can be a perception that agents can be overly pushy and lack of transparency. The reality is that the role requires integrity, market expertise and a genuine commitment to acting in clients’ best interests. That’s why I advocate working with professional companies like Allsop to ensure clients are getting a good level of service.
My biggest bugbear/the one thing I’d change about the industry: Poor communication from solicitors. Agreeing a transaction is only half the battle – delays and a lack of responsiveness can be incredibly frustrating. I don’t enjoy chasing, so clear and proactive communication makes a huge difference. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing.
Why I’m so passionate about DE&I: Having experienced a traditionally male-dominated, predominantly white sector, I’m passionate about driving meaningful change. I currently lead Allsop’s employee forum, helping to generate ideas and initiatives that support greater diversity, equity and inclusion across the business.
Why I’m so passionate about ESG: With a background in geography and a genuine love of the outdoors, I’m increasingly conscious of the impact we’re having on the environment. On a personal and professional level, I try to make more sustainable choices – from using public transport where possible to organising a tree-planting initiative for our office.
Where I’d like to be in five years’ time: I hope to be a partner at Allsop and to act as a visible role model for others looking to progress within the property industry. I also wouldn’t say no if Allsop set up an office in New Zealand!
Who I’d invite, living or dead, to a dinner party: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Claudia Winkleman, David Attenborough and Rebel Wilson.
What I do in my downtime: I like to stay active and regularly train at my local gym for Hyrox events, as well as hiking in the Yorkshire Dales at weekends. That’s balanced with my love of cooking and finding cosy wine bars. I also love to travel and recently joined a group of people for a 11 day tour around Costa Rica. Vietnam is next on the agenda.
The job I’d be doing if I wasn’t doing this: Teaching – although I suspect my holidays would be far more expensive during term time!
My advice for someone just starting out: Be a sponge – ask questions and listen carefully.
