Why broadband providers are the missing link in net zero building projects

As the global push for sustainability intensifies, the construction industry has come under increasing scrutiny to meet net zero targets. New build developments are well positioned to incorporate sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems and smart technologies to reduce carbon footprints. However, one crucial aspect is often overlooked in the initial planning stages – broadband infrastructure deployed by network operators.
Hidden carbon footprints
The omission of broadband infrastructure from early-stage development planning leads to an incomplete picture of a building’s carbon footprint. The typical configuration in many new build homes includes three fibres and three Optical Network Terminal (ONT), effectively tripling the carbon footprint for each dwelling. This over-engineering is often unnecessary and leads to higher emissions through excess civil works, materials and duplicated active equipment.
The situation becomes even more concerning when considering the core duct networks, which are frequently built with excess capacity, and overbuild. While this might seem like future proofing, it results in more civil engineering work and increases the use of materials – all of which contribute to higher carbon emissions. Without proper scrutiny and consideration, these emissions go unaccounted for.
Collaboration
To ensure that network operators are aligned with net zero goals from the outset, a consistent framework that includes all relevant stakeholders is crucial. Currently, the industry lacks both a strategy and external pressure to calculate the environmental impact of broadband infrastructure. This is particularly surprising given the integral role of fibre networks in new build developments. Broadband infrastructure is, after all, a legal requirement for modern housing projects. Yet its environmental impact is largely ignored.
A coordinated approach that involves broadband providers in the early planning stages would not only ensure that the infrastructure is designed efficiently but would also encourage collaboration between all stakeholders – developers, utilities, and local authorities. By including network operators in these discussions, we can create more thoughtful and sustainable network designs.
Integration
By integrating broadband providers early on, we can ensure that fibre infrastructure is properly designed with capacity according to the needs of the current and future development. This approach would reduce the over-deployment of raw materials and limit unnecessary civil works, helping to minimise the environmental impact.
Moreover, incorporating broadband into sustainability assessments would bring it in line with traditional utilities like water, electricity, and gas, which are already held accountable for their environmental impact. Every component of a building project, from materials to labour, has an environmental cost. Broadband infrastructure should be no exception. Standardising the assessment of digital infrastructure alongside other utilities would provide a more accurate picture of the overall carbon footprint of new builds.

Broadband technology, particularly full fibre, has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact. Fibre optic networks are more energy efficient than technologies and when implemented thoughtfully, they can contribute to a net zero future. For instance, modern fibre networks use less material by volume, requiring fewer chambers and allowing for more direct connections to houses. This is especially true in new build developments, where the nature of the project allows for more efficient designs.
Additionally, Using more sustainable materials, such as polyethylene ducting instead of uPVC ducting, can further reduce the environmental impact. This shift not only decreases emissions but also simplifies the installation process, making it more practical for developers and contractors.
To truly achieve net zero goals, policy frameworks need to explicitly include broadband infrastructure in their sustainability assessments. By integrating broadband infrastructure into the planning process, we can foster better collaboration, reduce unnecessary emissions, and make meaningful progress toward a truly sustainable future.
