DP World has confirmed plans for the £1bn expansion of London Gateway on the north bank of the River Thames in Thurrock, Essex.
The company intends to increase the capacity of the port by building two new shipping berths – taking the total to six berths – and a second rail terminal.
By the end of the decade, the full quayside will be able to simultaneously receive six vessels, each more than 400m long.
