The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has appointed an interim Standards and Regulation Board after all members of the board resigned last month.
Nigel Clarke has been appointed independent interim chair of the board. Clarke most recently chaired the General Pharmaceutical Council and is currently elected governor of Chelsea & Westminster NHS Trust.
Peter Smith FRICS, chair of the CPD framework steering group; Keith Thomas FRICS, chair of the qualifications and assessments committee; and Yo-Hann Tan and Lynne Livesey have also been appointed to the board.
The new board members came into position over the weekend following interviews with the appointments panel last week. The panel comprised RICS president Ann Gray, RICS interim senior independent governor Lord Bichard, Dame Glenys Stacey and Des Hudson.
Clarke said: “I am delighted to have been asked to become interim chair of the Standards and Regulation Board of the RICS. The independent regulatory function of RICS is of the utmost importance in protecting the public interest and ensuring trust in their professionals. RICS has responsibility for holding itself and its members to the highest standards of professional competence and conduct, and ultimately it is the SRB who hold the responsibility to make sure these standards are set and implemented to maintain public confidence. I am eager to get started in this new role and to utilise my experience in the regulation sector to benefit this vital institution.
“I also look forward to working with the team to progress further implementation of the recommendations of the Bichard RICS review, and to continue to embed the strengthened independent regulatory structure within the institution.”
Gray added: “I look forward to working with Nigel as he takes up the role of interim chair of the RICS Standards and Regulation Board. Nigel’s experience working with regulatory bodies and across a number of high profile organisations in senior roles, makes him an excellent appointment and I am optimistic about the future of the board moving forward. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our previous board members for their valued contributions to the RICS”.
