In January, prime minister Keir Starmer launched the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, and the latest forecasts suggest the data centresector will grow exponentially from $14.64bn in 2023 to $18.73bn by 2028. However, the sector faces huge challenges, power arguably the biggest of those, with little capacity left in west London. The sector also has to contend with a huge skills shortage, limited land availability, long lead times, growing ESG requirements, rising demand for renewable energy and increased scrutiny of proposed new developments.
So, what can we do to accelerate investment in the grid and power up the UK’s data centre ambitions, how does the government plan to turbocharge AI and what difference will its classification of data centres as Critical National Infrastructure make?
