Berkeley Strategic Land has secured planning permission on appeal for a new industrial and logistics development on a 18-acre site in Wiltshire.
Berkeley Strategic Land acquired the land on Horton Road, just under three miles north east of Devizes, from the Ministry of Defence in the late 1990s and the site has been vacant for a substantial period.
Wiltshire Council allocated the land for employment in its core strategy, which was adopted in 2015. The site allocation at Horton Road comprises two land ownerships, with the majority controlled by Berkeley Strategic Land.
As part of its planning application, a comprehensive site masterplan was submitted to Wiltshire Council, demonstrating how Berkeley’s portion of the site allocation could come forward without prejudicing the remainder of the site.
The planning permission allows for up to 25,000 sq m (circa 270,000 sq ft) of B2 (general industrial), B8 (storage and distribution) and use class E (commercial, business and service) space alongside landscaping and associated infrastructure.
Katherine Jones, associate partner at Carter Jonas in Oxford, which advised Berkeley Strategic Land on the planning application, said: “We are very pleased that this planning application has succeeded on appeal. The proposed development will facilitate much-needed employment space, which provides the potential to transform this disused land and benefit the local community through improved pedestrian and cycle links in addition to environmental improvements.”
