Construction output has grown for the fourth month on the trot, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In October, monthly construction output is estimated to have increased 0.8% in volume terms to £15,248m – the highest level of construction output since records began in January 2010.
Growth was driven by increases in both new work (0.5%) and repair and maintenance (1.3%).
The level of construction output in October 2022 was 4.8% (£698m) higher than the February 2020 pre-pandemic level. New work was 0.2% (£21m) higher than the February 2020 level and repair and maintenance work was 13.5% (£677m) higher than the 2020 level.
In addition to the monthly increase, construction output grew 1.1% in the three months to October 2022 – the twelfth consecutive period of growth in the three-month-on-three-month series. The increase came from growth in new work, which rose 3.1%. Repair and maintenance work suffered a 2.1% fall.
The ONS update said annual price growth of materials is starting to ease from the high level witnessed in mid-2022 and despite the current high prices the industry is maintaining growth and new order books remain strong.
