Leading industry organisations behind the development of the new UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (‘The Standard’) are calling on the whole built environment community to back the adoption of the game-changing new benchmark.
Representatives of the governance board of the UK NZCBS met last week with MP Chris Skidmore, author of ‘Mission Zero: Independent Review of Net Zero’ to discuss The Standard, which aims to establish a clear pathway for the built environment industry to achieve net zero, in line with the UK’s 2050 net zero target. During the meeting, they discussed the key findings and recommendations of the review, the role of The Standard in assisting the government’s net zero aspirations, the importance of industry-wide collaboration and the benefits of using The Standard as a benchmark for best practice.
The meeting followed the conclusion of The Standard’s Call for Evidence at the end of last year, which saw more than 850 data points submitted. These are currently being reviewed by the Technical Steering Group, which is developing the metrics that will underpin The Standard.
The next stage will be to engage and consult with the wider built environment sector.
In collaboration with media partner, BE News, the group, which includes representatives from UKGBC, RICS, RIBA, BBP and CIBSE, will be holding a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders at MIPIM, Cannes, to thrash out what the standard should look like and the methodology behind it.
Leading industry figures from across the built environment will then be invited to give their feedback at the ‘Raising The Standard Summit’, hosted by BE News, in late Spring.
The aim is to beta test The Standard during the second half of 2023, with a view to rollout across the built environment industry in 2024.
Commenting on the media partnership with BE News, David Partridge, chair of the governance board for the UK NZCBS, said: “Our intention from the outset has been to develop a single, commonly agreed methodology for measuring the net zero carbon impact of the UK’s real estate assets and buildings. Our partnership with BE News is a critical part of the programme of engagement and consultation, which will ensure that The Standard meets the needs and requirements of everyone who will use, commission and rely on it”
