Trafalgar Global has secured planning consent to deliver 354 new homes on the former British United Shoe Machinery (BUSM) site in Leicester.
The regeneration plans for the vacant, 10-acre brownfield site, which have been designed by multi-disciplinary practice rg+p, will see 311 apartments delivered across seven buildings in addition to 43 two-, three- and four-bedroom houses, public open space, landscaping and parking.
Mandeep Singh, director at Trafalgar Global, said: “It’s hugely rewarding to invest in projects that will positively change the cityscape and encourage more homeowners to put down roots here. This approval is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to delivering healthy and thriving communities.”
Sarah Grocock, associate architect at rg+p, added: “The land at Charles Bennion Walk forms part of a wider regeneration plan first envisaged in the early 2000’s. This includes the neighbouring schemes at Wolsey Island and Abbey Park Road, both of which we designed and have now been delivered, so it’s really exciting to be able to continue transforming the cityscape with this approval.
“The newly approved scheme provides a high quality residential development to suit modern living, whilst also celebrating the site’s heritage through the application of materials, textures and detailing inspired by its historical use. Brick and metal are draped over each other to create distinct layers, mirroring the traditional assembly process of a leather brogue. Sawtooth roofs mimic the design of the neighbouring Sock Island apartments, while the site’s wider placemaking seeks to maximise views to local landmarks through the shaping and arrangement of buildings.”
The project team also included BSP Consulting, RJ Tree Services, SV Surveying and JBA Consulting.
