Two insect species previously thought to be extinct in the UK have been discovered at Betteshanger Park near Deal, Kent.
Kirby’s Lesser Mason Bee, which was last recorded more than a century ago, and a tiny Jewel Wasp were both sighted at a 24-acre biodiversity improvement scheme at the park during a recent survey undertaken by Adonis Blue Environmental Consultants.
Mark Quinn, owner of Betteshanger Park, said: “I’m thrilled that the hard work of our small team has enabled wildlife to flourish. The discovery of these insects, previously thought extinct in the UK, is truly remarkable. Our vision has always been to balance creating a vibrant space for visitors and the local community whilst also protecting and enhancing the park’s natural environment. While the park’s viability continues to limit resources, this is a strong start. However, we also know there is more work to do.
“As a developer, I’m often told how much harm development causes wildlife, yet this is proof that, by working with councils and ecologists, developers can play a key role in conservation while still delivering much‑needed housing. We are already using the outcomes of this report to help focus our limited resources and have made further enhancements since the field survey took place in 2025 and will continue the important progress we’ve made. It’s not every day you can say you’ve helped bring back species once lost to the UK!”
