Vastint Hospitality BV has secured planning consent for revised plans for the delivery of a new hotel within the Newcastle Helix development.

The 198-bed hotel will be delivered in two blocks in a stepped design to lessen the visual impact to St James Boulevard with the taller, eight-storey rear block more fitting with the scale of buildings in the vicinity such as the Lumen and the Spark.

The revised design sees the northern and southern elevations of the hotel lengthened with basement space redesigned to accommodate a function/conference room.

The company originally secured consent for a hotel on the site in 2022, which would operate under Marriott’s no-frills Moxy brand. However, following a rethink by Vastint the hotel will now operate under Marriott’s Tribute brand.

Matt Verlander, director at Avison Young Newcastle, who provided project management and town planning services to Vastint Hospitality BV, said: “We’re delighted that the amended scheme for the hotel was unanimously approved by the council’s planning committee. This marks another step towards delivering a great addition to the Helix and also for the city centre.”
