Matthew Pennycook has been appointed minister of state at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) in prime minister Keir Starmer’s new cabinet.
Pennycook was elected as the MP for Greenwich and Woolwich at the 2015 general election, replacing long-serving MP Nick Raynsford.
After leaving university Pennycook worked for a number of charity and voluntary sector organisations, including the Child Poverty Action Group and the Fair Pay Network.
He also worked as a researcher at the Resolution Foundation to develop new ideas about how wealth can be more shared more fairly and served on the Greenwich Housing Rights’ board of trustees.
On announcing the news, Pennycook said: “It is a real honour to have been appointed minister of state at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. Tackling the housing crisis and boosting economic growth is integral to national renewal. Time to get to work.”
