Burnham Abbey in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, has been put up for sale by its owners The Society of Precious Blood with a guide price of £3.5m.

The Anglican community of contemplative nuns has instructed Knight Frank to market the medieval monastery, which was founded in 1266 as a convent for Augustinian canonesses by Richard, Earl of Cornwall and brother of King Henry III.

The Grade I-listed monastic estate provides approximately 20,000 sq ft of space spread across a series of historic buildings set within circa 2.8-acres of picturesque gardens and grounds.

In addition to the abbey buildings, the estate includes an 18th-century Grade II-listed timber-framed barn and granary, gardens with a Tudor perimeter wall, an ornamental pond, orchard and a paddock. There is also a three-bedroom cottage and retreat/guest accommodation.

Emma Cleugh, partner and head of Knight Frank’s education and charities team, said: “Burnham Abbey provides a unique opportunity for a buyer to acquire an exceptionally well-preserved example of 13th-century monastic architecture. This historic estate provides extensive accommodation in a superb location and offers the potential for alternative uses, subject to the necessary consents.”
